Giving Table: Culturally Appropriate Food Giveaway

Genesis Youth Foundation (GYF) and its community partners are pleased to announce the 3rd annual holiday food grocery giveaway on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM. The event will be taking place at the Hope+Elim building, 2500 university Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50311.
The Giving Table Food Giveaway will feature culturally appropriate food that is familiar to African refugee and immigrant families, although anyone in central Iowa experiencing food insecurity is welcome to receive food, while supplies last. This year's event will include health assessment component where community members will have the opportunity to assess their blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

The availability of culturally sensitive food is important because it not only addresses issues of food insecurity, but basic dignity as well. Access to food that is familiar and that people know how to prepare is important, particularly during the holidays where food takes on special significance for many different cultures.

Sam Gabriel, Co-founder and Executive Director of GYF said, “He would like to see more community partners and individuals to join force in putting on this event to the community through the spirit of 'Ubuntu'...meaning I am because we are." During this holiday season, many families and elders in the Central Iowa community are facing many challenges including housing, food insecurity, and employment. GYF and its community partners believes that the Giving Table Food Giveaway will be truly appreciated and a blessing to everyone who is able to take part.”

GYF is pleased to partner with Hope+Elim church, Coffee FC, City of Mercy church, Eat Greater Des Moines, Capital Fruit, Imani Family Church, and more. We are seeking more partners and individuals contributors. Please contact us at 515-343-0149 for more details on how to get involved.
