Social Distancing? Join Us Online!
During this time of social distancing due to COVID-19 health precautions, we would like to extend our online at-home tutoring program to assist under-served refugee and immigrant youth. We are interested in partnering with community and faith-based leaders to offer our Academic Enrichment program for the rest of the 2020 school year. Parents are encouraged to get in touch with us about this program.
Change The World.
Our after school program offers a comprehensive focus on educational development for reading, writing, math, science, language and the arts. It is paramount that the youth we serve understand and excel at grade level material for their age. If we feel some of our kids need more guidance, we find tutors for them to assist in their success.
The Genesis Youth Foundation offers a tutoring program for our youth that are falling behind in school. We ensure a respectful and nurturing educational experience for all of our youth regardless of their proficiency. We recognize that some of our youth and their families are still struggling to integrate into the Greater Des Moines Metro area, and need the assistance we provide through our program.

Genesis at School
GYF at School / Leveling the Playing Field
Genesis Youth Foundation’s program, Leveling the Playing Field in West Des Moines, is a comprehensive tutoring program for students who are enrolled in ELL programs in their schools. English Language Learners in elementary, middle, and high school are tutored by an experienced instructor to help facilitate a successful transition to an English-speaking classroom. This Leveling the Playing Field program is modeled on an extracurricular program Genesis has offered immigrant and refugee children in Des Moines and Johnston since 2014. Held four to five school nights a week during the school year, Genesis offers participants academic enrichment through one-on-one and small group mentoring with caring, engaging and positive adult role models.
Students enrolled in the Leveling the Playing Field program will meet weekly with instructors in small, age-appropriate groups on Zoom. Students receive academic assistance for core classes through this program and strengthen their overall English Language proficiency and math proficiency. Genesis tutors maintain close contact with students through pinpoint specific IXL assignments and individualized instruction, while also monitoring students’ progress and providing support.
GYF Parents & Kids / Family Engagement
A large body of research has demonstrated that parental involvement in their child's education and after-school activities are instrumental to the student's successl. Genesis Youth Foundation is committed to pushing the spirit of Ujima, meaning “a collective effort” and Ubuntu, meaning "I am because we are" to creating a community where immigrant and refugee youth can be successful in the classroom by reducing drop-out rates, increasing student achievement and students’ positive attitudes towards learning.
Part of GYF Family Engagement is recognizing individuals' successes and celebrations, including birthdays. The Genesis Family Birthday Celebration is held quarterly on the 3rd Saturday of every third month to celebrate GYF youth and family members who have had birthdays during the previous and current months. Genesis wants to celebrate our GYF kids and parents in a meaningful way as part of the GYF family. We will sing Happy Birthday, offer remarks, and then cut and serve birthday cake. Gift bags for youth and adults who have had birthdays will be provided. Please wear your mask. Temperatures will be taken upon arrival and hand sanitizer and disposable masks will be available.
